The Parakeet or Budgie has been kept as a pet bird for many, many decades since they were first exported from their native Australia. These little birds are the stars of a huge hobby with budgie fanciers the world over breeding new color combinations and developing "show" birds with genetics that would impress an Olympic athlete. Often a "first bird", the budgie makes an excellent companion for adults, seniors, or responsible children. They are reasonably priced when purchased from a reputable breeder as hand fed babies ( the only kind to buy as pets ) but they are full of as much attitude and talking ability as parrots many times their size !
