Pet Birds --------- Other Goodies | MACAW PARROT - SCARLET" Frankly, Scarlet... "Image # M 50When most "non-bird" people think of a Parrot, it's likely that they are thinking of a Scarlet Macaw in their minds. Scarlet Macaws look like a painter designed them for maximum impact with the rainbow of brilliant, contrasting feathers they have on them. These Macaws have a reputation for being more inclined to become one person birds and get "snappy" as they get older, and in my own personal experiences photographing them over the years, I sadly would agree. But it is important to remember that while generalizations may often give clues about many birds, each bird is a unique individual with a separate personality that will help determine behavior as it grows. ( For info on an exceptional Scarlet, see below ) The Scarlet Macaw in this image is perched in front of a dramatically contrasting vibrant green background that accents the wonderful rainbow of colors displayed on Scarlet Macaws. This lovely mature Scarlet Macaw is lifting her foot and slowly reaching for the one special spot that cries to be itched under her wing... One exceptional Scarlet Macaw I met was over 50 years old and he was so gentle with me that it was amazing. He lived at a Florida tourist attraction that I was on assignment at, and was on a perch along the entrance to the visitors trail so tourists could admire him despite his missing toes ( from frostbite decades ago ) and fairly rough feather condition. "Old Joe" was his name and he perched and napped lazily in the warm Florida sun for the most part and did his duty with little emotion. I watched dozens of people walk by him with a few snapping pictures and a few more letting their children torment the poor bird with loud screams. When the tourists were gone, I walked to his perch area and talked gently to him and he became very lively, climbing down the perch to be right next to me and putting his head down for a nice long Macaw head scratching / preening session. A few minutes later and this bird was on me, laying his head on my chest while I sat down on a nearby bench and picked pin feathers for him and rubbed his obviously sore arthritic, deformed feet. I spent 15 minutes or so with this bird who was nearly twice my own age at the time and thought of the changes he saw in the world over the 50 years that he spent watching tourists parade by daily. He was a noble, old soul kind of bird who you knew had seen a lot in his long life. That special experience was one of my fondest memories of a Scarlet Macaw ever.
