The image was taken on a sailboat in the Florida Keys, near Marathon Key at sunset time. This Greenwing Macaw actually lived on this sailboat and his human family cruised the coast and islands while living aboard the boat. I was out shooting sunset pictures at the marina location I had scouted earlier when I kept hearing the unmistakable call of a Macaw over and over again, near by. Curiosity got the best of me and I began to walk to docks nearby looking for the source of the noise. If did not take long to find him either - I was walking along looking down at the boats in the water when the Macaw "Alarm" call started above my head ! He was perched about 15 feet up the mast of the 40 foot sailboat as it was docked, and was doing a great job as an intruder warning alarm. I could smell food cooking from within the boat, so I ventured down the catwalk near the boat and called out to any occupants. As I did this, the Greenwing came sliding down a cable in an instant and was sitting on the edge of the deck railing closest to me, fluffing his feathers and looking mighty intimidating. I have seen Pit Bull watchdogs that could be put to shame by the tough, scary, mean bird act this Macaw was doing ! The owner came out and we talked for a few minutes before she invited me aboard. Once she told the bird that I was okay, he relaxed and became a typical mellow macaw more concerned about preening himself than with worrying about me - but he still kept one eye on me the whole time. The lady explained how her and her husband cruised and lived aboard their boat and that the bird had his sea legs for years as he lived with them. This bird saw more of the Tropics than any of his wild relatives ever would, with ports of call in many exotic locations of island nations. He was totally at ease on the boat and he really enjoyed using all the guy wires that hang from the sails and mast riggings as his giant bird toys. He was not destructive, but instead would climb - and I mean really CLIMB - way up to near the very top of the mast - at least 30 feet above the deck, and then playfully swing upside down on a wire and come zooming down it a full speed till he got back to the deck. He would strut across the deck and peek through the open portals at his family below deck from time to time just to make sure that dinner was still doing okay down there. As I finished my chat with his human, he took a seat on the wheel of the ship and the sun dropped behind him, bathing the area in the warm tropical glow of the Florida Keys.
