MACAW PARROT - HYACINTH

Majestic is a word that barely describes the beauty of these largest rare Macaw Parrots, the Hyacinth. Feathered with a breathtaking rich blue body, there are two brilliant yellow patches that contrast perfectly to outline the birds eyes and a small section behind their lower beak. These birds are very endangered and captive breeding programs aim to keep this species alive in the future as its natural habitat is destroyed at an amazing pace, forcing the birds to look for new places to find their unique dietary needs. These are not birds for a beginner, as they have extensive special diets required to keep them healthy and need huge housing areas to live and play. Plus, with a hand fed baby selling for nearly $ 10,000.00, it's unlikely a novice bird person would end up with one - we hope.
Over the last 10 years, I have had the privilege to meet, play with, and photograph a few dozen individual Hyacinth Macaws, and those photo shoots were always magical. These birds are so impressive to be around with their regal attitudes and striking good looks, that the fact they have even better personalities makes them really easy to fall in love with instantly. The thing I found common among them, other than the fact that they are HEAVY to hold on your arm compared to any other parrot, is that the ones I met were nearly all what I would call "lover birds" who wanted to do nothing more than snuggle up and enjoy some cuddle time, even with a stranger like me and during a photo session !
